Irish Brown Bread

325 oven 1 bread
3 cups of flour (1 1/2 self rising white & 1 1/2 whole wheat)
2 cups of milk (1 1/2 whole white milk & 1 1/2 buttermilk)
1 T baking Powder and 1 tsp baking soda
4 T melted butter
1/2 tsp salt
1 egg slightly beaten

Mix dry ingredients and add butter & egg. Stir to blend all and pour into prepared round cake pans.

Bake 325o 60+ minutes depending on oven. Check with knife - it should come out clean - before removing from oven. Cover with a tea towel until cool and then wrap in wax paper and foil. You can take a slice before doing this with sweet butter and marmalade... yummmm!!

You can substitute all buttermilk and skip the salt, but blend the flours because the bread will be heavy. Sometimes I use a good Irish brown flour or a stone ground with white flour. I have never substituted lactose free milk, but I am sure it can be done.
